Outpatient Clinics

Bury Hospice hosts SACT and phlebotomy Clinics for patients of the Christie Hospital throughout the week

Outpatient Clinics

We host The Christie clinic in our Living Well Centre twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday as part of the Systemic Anti Cancer Therapy (SACT) Outreach service, bringing treatment closer to home.

We have also launched a motor neurone disease (MND) clinic in collaboration with Salford Royal Hospital (Northern Care Alliance). The clinic runs every third Tuesday between 1pm and 5pm.

Christie Clinic

We host The Christie clinic in our Living Well Centre twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday as part of the Systemic Anti Cancer Therapy (SACT) Outreach service bringing treatment closer to home. SACT is the delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapy - this can be chemotherapy, immunotherapy, bisphosphonates or hormone treatment.

Carol Kennett, aged 43 first got breast cancer in 2019. She had surgery and received a course of chemotherapy. On December 23 rd 2021, Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer on the on the opposite side. Both primary cancers were diagnosed as rare triple negative breast cancers. Carol started her chemotherapy at The Christie before being referred to Bury Hospice to continue her treatment.

Carol said: “The Christie Clinic at Bury Hospice has made an enormous difference to me.”

Previously, I had to travel between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours, depending on the traffic to have my treatment at The Christie. Now it only takes me 10 minutes. It is not as stressful as having to travel to The Christie. It saves me a lot of time. I’m not panicking about having to get home for childcare and my energy levels are higher. It is also less stressful for my family members so I have more people to support me.

“It is a friendly environment in the Living Well Centre and I speak to the nurses and other patients when I’m having my treatment.”

We care for cancer patients every day and see first-hand the strain that travelling to The Christie has. It’s great to be able to offer our facilities to help cancer patients across Bury.

Motor Neurone Disease Clinic

We have launched a Motor Neurone Disease (MND) clinic. We are excited to have partnered with our colleagues from Salford Royal Hospital (Northern Care Alliance) to provide this service for people in Bury who require specialist follow-up care. The clinic runs every third Tuesday between 1pm and 5pm.

Specialist MND clinics provide a place for people to meet with MND and palliative care consultants and specialist nurses for follow-up support, including symptoms management, advanced care planning, care reviews, discussions about MND and palliative care and advice on living well with the disease.

Rose Morris, MND Specialist Nurse said: “We hope that holding the clinic within this environment also provides an introduction to the services available within the hospice for support and symptom management”

Alison and her mum Susan who is living with MND both agree. Alison said, “The environment feels welcoming and calm and is closer for us to attend than Salford Royal – A much better option for us thank you.”

Dr Tim Jackson, Palliative Care Consultant and Dr John Ealing, MND Consultant recognised the need to make it easier for their patients to attend follow up sessions and this became a big reason for the work to bring the clinics out to the Greater Manchester community.

Dr Ealing said: “We are excited to start this new joint clinic at Bury Hospice. We hope this will offer better access to services for people living with MND and their families closer to home.”

Barbara, who lives with MND and who attended the clinic launch in Bury is pleased to have these clinics closer to home. She said: “Attending the clinic here is a million times easier for me than having to travel to Salford Royal, it was a 10-minute journey rather than a 3-hour ambulance.”
